Heat Engines lab has been an integral part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering since 1963. The lab aims to provide knowledge of heat engines and related equipment to UG and PG students and to inculcate in them the experimentation skills required for their professional careers. The facilities are also used extensively for research and consultancy projects.This lab is used for the experiments in the courses viz. Heat Engines Laboratory (ME4091D) for B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering and Thermal Engineering Laboratory (ME6292D) for M.Tech in Thermal Sciences. The equipment in the lab is also related to the contents of the theory courses Thermal Engineering I(ME3003D), Automobile Engineering (ME3032D) and Analysis of Internal Combustion Engines (ME6227D). The lab is used by a large number of UG and PG students for their projects. The Heat Engines lab is one of the largest in the department, with a floor area of 900 sq.m. and accommodates a variety of internal combustion engines in addition to other thermal engineering equipment (e.g. boiler, gasifier, compressors, wind tunnel etc.). It has a good collection of automobile components and demo models to help students understand their intricate details. Apart from the research scholars, PG and under-graduate students of NITC are using this laboratory, and a great number of research works and consultancy services are offered for many reputed industries, companies and academic institutions outside. Some of the research equipments include computerised variable compression ratio engines, emission analysers, electrolyser etc. The lab has a dedicated section for testing fuel properties such as, calorific value, flash and fire point and viscosity. Advanced testing equipment such as an Automatic Bomb Calorimeter and Automatic Flash and Fire Point Apparatus will also be available for research and consultancy purposes within a few months.
